rECENT WORKS AND STATEMENT FROM THE ARTIST
Native American Series
ARTIST STATEMENT
Over the years, my work seems to keep circling back to large, figurative subjects. My most recent work is a series of Native American Indians. My interest began as I collected vintage black and white postcards over a period of time. These many post cards and books have served as my references.
I found these faces to be particularly interesting, some are craggy, some lovely, some weathered by hardships and time. All, in some way, express their own individual dignity which I have tried to capture.
I was fascinated by the varying patterns and textures of their hair, their skin, as well as in their clothing. I felt that all these things would combine well with my painting style.
I paint expressively using line, color and many layers of paint to give depth and emotional intensity. My work tends to be bold and intense with much patterning. My goal is to capture the emotion of the figure rather than an accurate likeness. I strive to give life, character, and power to my paintings.
These subjects have been painted to honor and respect the significance of our indigenous people.
